William Thornton was born about 1620 at "The Hills," Yorkshire, England and died about 1708 in Petsworth Parish, Gloucester Co, VA.

He married Elizabeth Rowland. She was born about 1627 in Old Rappahannock, VA and died in Stafford Co, VA. She was the daughter of John Rowland.

Their children were:

Francis Thronton Sr. (born 5 November 1651 in VA)
